Marriott

Runs thousands of hotels around the world with brands like Marriott, Ritz-Carlton and Sheraton.

📖 Its story

In 1927, husband and wife J. Willard and Alice Marriott opened a little root beer stand in Washington. Later they sold hot food and called it the Hot Shoppe. Thirty years later, in 1957, they opened their first hotel.

💵 How it makes money

It charges hotel owners fees for using its brands and for running their hotels.

🤯 Fun fact

Before it had hotels, Marriott started out selling root beer, a drink with no alcohol.

👍 The good part

It has lots of hotel brands and millions of members in its points program.

⚠️ The risk

If people travel less, for example during a crisis or a pandemic, it earns much less.
