What is the IPC Mexico?

The index of the Mexican Stock Exchange: it follows the 35 most important companies in Mexico.

🧺 What is an index?

An index is like a basket with tiny pieces of lots of companies. Instead of looking at them one by one, the index tells you with a single number whether they did well or badly all together. That's why it's measured in points, not in money.

📖 Its story

The Mexican Stock Exchange started calculating the Prices and Quotations Index (IPC) on October 30, 1978, with 42 companies. In 2000 it was set at 35 companies, and since 2015 it has been calculated together with S&P Dow Jones Indices.

⚙️ How it works

It's like the S&P 500, but for Mexico: a basket with the 35 biggest Mexican companies that are bought and sold the most. When the IPC goes up, most of Mexico's big companies had a good day.

🤯 Fun fact

The IPC includes names you might see every day at home and on the street in Mexico. Look up the list with your parents and count how many you know.

🎓 For older kids

In Mexico you can also buy the whole IPC as if it were a single stock: with a fund (ETF) called NAFTRAC, which copies the 35 companies in the index.
