ExxonMobil

Finds, pumps and refines oil and gas, and makes chemicals and plastics.

📖 Its story

In 1870, John D. Rockefeller started Standard Oil, which came to control almost all the oil in the United States. In 1911, the courts ordered it to be split into many smaller companies. Two of those “daughters,” Exxon and Mobil, joined together again in 1999.

💵 How it makes money

By selling oil, natural gas, gasoline, lubricants and chemical products.

🤯 Fun fact

Exxon and Mobil were two “sisters” split up in 1911 that got back together 88 years later.

👍 The good part

It produces energy the world still uses every day for transportation, factories and electricity.

⚠️ The risk

Many countries want to use less oil to protect the climate, and the price of oil goes up and down a lot.
