Caterpillar

Makes giant machines for building, digging and working in mines.

📖 Its story

Benjamin Holt and Daniel Best had companies that made tractors in California, and they were competitors. In 1925 they decided to join together and form Caterpillar. Their tractors with tracks could move over muddy ground without getting stuck.

💵 How it makes money

It sells and rents heavy machinery, engines and spare parts to builders and mines.

🤯 Fun fact

It's called 'Caterpillar' because its tractors with tracks seemed to crawl along like a caterpillar.

👍 The good part

Its machines help build roads, buildings and dams all over the world.

⚠️ The risk

When less gets built or mineral prices drop, it sells fewer machines.
